All kitchen companies have Cabinetmakers, but not many have Joiners. Qualified Cabinetmakers are highly skilled individuals with knowledge of cabinetry mass manufacture, which includes among other things; design, CNC’s, edging, profiling, cutting, sanding, cabinetry construction and installation. A successful kitchen manufacturer cannot operate without Cabinetmakers.
There is a lesser-known role known as a Joiner. They are individuals skilled in broader and often more complex woodwork that goes beyond cabinetry. Joiners work on bespoke pieces that can include intricate, built-in or freestanding furniture, architectural elements, staircases, window frames, and even custom wall panelling.
Custom joinery is highly adaptable to any part of a home or building, involving more detailed craftsmanship and flexibility in material use. Joiners frequently handle challenging projects that require custom shaping, detailed joinery techniques, and a keen understanding of structural elements, as well as a mix of materials beyond wood.
We will highlight the way that Dan Kitchens regularly uses Custom Joinery within its kitchens and other cabinetry.
Examples of Custom Joinery
Modern, high-end kitchens and other cabinetry around the home can include many elements of custom joinery elements. This can include the following :
Timber doors, drawer fronts and panels
Timber drawers, door and front panels are the most common form of joinery.
Plain timber doors are constructed with a veneer face and edged in solid wood, giving the appearance of a full solid timber door. Plain timber doors are now constructed this way not because they are cheaper, but because timber veneers have greater resistance to warping, better colour and grain consistency, larger sheet sizes and is more environmentally friendly.
Detailed timber doors include more intricate edge and face profiles, representing a higher level of difficulty to make. This style of door was very popular in the 80’s 90’s (think about all those Ttassie oak kitchens). The skill and equipment to make these detailed doors, including the material availability, has dwindled down since that period. Detailed timber doors in a shaker profile (regular and narrow) are making a resurgence, keeping this joinery skill alive.
Timber Drawers & Organisers
Traditionally all drawers were made of solid timber and joined with a dovetail joint. It is a construction method that showcases the beauty of solid timber and the craftsmanship of the Joiner.
This method has gone out of style due to the cost of manufacturing and the greater strength of today’s steel drawer runners. There are solutions from various high end kitchen hardware manufacturers that allow the look of solid timber drawers with the added strength of steel drawer runners.
A way to make your drawer internals standout is to use custom timber organisers. The normal expectation when opening a drawer is to see plastic or metal organisers that, although practical, tend to be plain.
Timber organisers, constructed of solid and veneer timber uplift drawer internals, are nostalgic for some, and can be made to suit the exact size of the drawer.
Spice racks, cutlery dividers, dinnerware and organisers are commonly made for kitchens.
Integrated wooden handles
In our showroom we have an example of a kitchen that has solid timber recessed handles and edging, in a laminate door. It takes multiple steps to craft these door and drawer fronts, which really highlights the beauty of timber and the skill of the Joiner.
Islands
Kitchen islands are a popular use for custom joinery.
Today’s kitchen islands tend to be standout pieces in the kitchen, often using different materials like timber and construction methods to the rest of the kitchen. This includes curved timber ends, using beaded or fluted profiles, and structural elements like legs and rails that mimic table construction.
Kitchen Rangehoods
A great point of difference which really makes a kitchen unique is having a timber rangehood. Although not recommended for all situations (cooking with a lot of oils can stain timber over time), timber rangehoods can play a similar role to kitchen islands, standing out as a key feature of your kitchen.
Why You Should Consider Custom Joinery
In a world where modern kitchens heavily rely on non-natural materials like melamine and plastics, custom timber joinery offers a refreshing alternative. Here’s why you should consider bringing the warmth and beauty of natural timber into your kitchen:
1. Reconnect with Nature
Custom timber joinery reintroduces natural materials into your home, creating a sense of harmony and balance. Timber’s organic textures and grains provide a tactile and visual connection to nature, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere that synthetic materials simply cannot replicate.
2. Showcase Exceptional Craftsmanship
Every piece of custom timber joinery reflects the skill and artistry of the craftspeople who create it. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, custom pieces stand as unique works of art, demonstrating care, precision, and attention to detail that mass-produced alternatives lack.
3. Design Versatility
Timber joinery offers greater flexibility in design, allowing you to create a kitchen tailored to your specific needs and aesthetic preferences. Whether it’s bespoke cabinetry, integrated shelving, or intricate detailing, custom timber solutions adapt seamlessly to your vision and space.
4. Celebrate Natural Uniqueness
No two pieces of timber are exactly alike, making each joinery element one of a kind. The unique patterns, grains, and tones of natural timber add character and individuality to your kitchen, ensuring that your space is truly unique.
5. Sustainable and Renewable
Sustainably harvested timber is a renewable resource, making it an environmentally responsible choice. By opting for certified timber, you can reduce your ecological footprint while supporting ethical forestry practices. Timber joinery not only looks stunning but also aligns with a commitment to sustainability.
Bringing Timeless Beauty to Modern Kitchens
Custom timber joinery is more than a design choice; it’s an investment in quality, sustainability, and individuality. By incorporating the natural beauty of timber into your kitchen, you create a space that is functional, stylish, and deeply connected to the environment.
