Sydney CBD Project

Clients living in an architecturally significant building at Sydney’s Macquarie Street needed a new kitchen and home office and Dan Kitchens faced a number of unique challenges. Prominent in Sydney’s CBD, the building’s modern heritage listing meant refits had to adhere to the original architect’s vision. The build was made all the more difficult with a tight space for both the home office and kitchen to design around while the client’s desire to increase the size of the appliances added to the challenge.

Although some kitchens are deliberately planned to be a focal point of a home, the clients favoured a more discreet approach, the kitchen being hidden behind a wall as it was originally designed. Significant advances in kitchen cabinetry and Dan Kitchens’ 40 years of experience in the industry made it possible to get more out of the original kitchen space than was thought achievable.

The home office is located in a room with a curved wall which influenced the design.

A combination of American Walnut and white polyurethane were chosen for the colour palette.

The kitchen has two entrances thanks to a central dividing wall. This dividing wall also provides a place to position tall kitchen cabinetry/appliances, as well as a blank canvas for artwork.

A de-saturated style with white doors and black granite benchtop.

A large Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine storage were included in the design at great effort as the kitchen space was tight and accessibility into the building was very limited.

Pitted copper doors are the only elements of colour in the kitchen. The copper was chosen because of the similarity to the building’s distinctive external cladding.

So as to be as sensitive to the original architects design as possible, the footprint of the kitchen remained changed.
