Tucked away in a quiet Northmead street, this century-old Federation-style home originally had a traditional arrangement of modest rooms, with the kitchen separated from the main living areas. The homeowners wanted a larger, more connected kitchen that would suit everyday family life while remaining sympathetic to the character of the house.
The rear of the home was reworked to create a combined kitchen, dining and living space with four-metre-high ceilings, a new laundry and bathroom, and a stronger connection to the outdoor entertaining area. Dan Kitchens became involved during construction to refine the kitchen layout and make better use of the available space.
Through the Kitchen Design Service, the design developed around the owners’ preference for a traditional kitchen with contemporary functionality. Particular attention was given to proportions, cabinetry detailing, appliance integration, storage and the relationship between the kitchen and the broader living space.
The finished kitchen introduces a more generous and practical centre to the home while retaining the period character the owners wanted to preserve.

The completed renovation gives the century-old home a larger, more connected kitchen while preserving the sense of proportion and detailing expected of its Federation character. The new kitchen forms part of a combined living and dining area, balancing traditional detailing with contemporary functionality and a more open family layout.
