Dan Kitchens was brought into this Mulgoa project after an earlier interpretation of the kitchen failed to meet the owners’ expectations. The new custom joinery had to fit beneath retained concrete benchtops while accommodating integrated appliances including a drawer-style refrigerator and downdraft extractor in the island. The kitchen also needed to sit comfortably within the large combined living, dining and family space and relate to the owners’ furnishings and artworks.
The material palette is deliberately varied, combining pitted copper, near-black satin polyurethane, subway tiles, pressed metal, natural timber and concrete. The walk-in pantry continues this approach, while handmade recycled timber palings supplied by the client line the island bar back and tall laundry cabinets. The project reflects the same attention to detail found in Dan Kitchens’ Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains renovations.

The large pantry space included an informal desk area.
Open shelves, a French door refrigerator and tall cabinet doors provide ample storage space – keeping the rest of the kitchen tidy.
The kitchen is a reflection of the owner’s desire to collect interesting objects – pitted copper panels, black painted doors, embossed splashback and recycled timber bar backing to name a few of the materials.
Integrated fridge and freezer drawers by Scholtés were designed to fit in the island behind copper panels.

The completed project successfully reworks the earlier kitchen while retaining its substantial concrete benchtops. New cabinetry, integrated appliances and a deliberately varied material palette bring the kitchen, walk-in pantry and associated joinery together as a functional and distinctive part of the semi-rural home.
