Coogee Beach Kitchen

A quintessential Australian backdrop frames this eccentric kitchen space. Overlooking the Sydney’s Coogee beach, this apartment renovation aimed to maximise the amazing views and light from the outdoors. The original kitchen in the apartment was small and confined into a corner. The brief to Dan Kitchens was to make the kitchen a larger practical space, lighten and modernise the aesthetic and pay homage to the surrounding beach environment. Grasping these challenges set by the client and space, the new kitchen design and layout went far beyond what could have been perceived by the client. The solution encompasses what is essentially a large house kitchen and appliances into an apartment sized space.

The kitchen features a long eat-in island with a Dekton ‘driftwood’ style benchtop, expansive rear kitchen benchtop and a Sub-Zero beverage fridge. A Scandinavian colour palette allows elements such as the island benchtop and mirror splashback to become the statement pieces of the kitchen. The subtle ship-lack grooves in the island, coupled with the driftwood style benchtop resonates with the beach environment and a smoked mirror splashback adds drama and scale to the overall kitchen aesthetic whilst still harmoniously fitting in with its surrounds.

The kitchen features minimal handles and hides some of the appliances behind doors.

Integrated Sub-Zero Wine storage helps maintain the theme of keeping the look streamlined.

The clients were over the moon that designer Daniel Mazic managed to fit such a large island in their space.

The design allows the eye to easily look past the kitchen and out towards the view beyond, connecting the two together.

Purpose built legs were made to support the island benchtop at the informal seating end.

Beech peg drawer matches in beautifully with the warm timber flooring.

Although it has the appearance of weathered timber, the material is actually porcelain-based, meaning it is extremely durable against heat, scratches and moisture.
