Overlooking picturesque bushland reserve and Balmoral Beach beyond, the location was always situated in a tranquil spot, but the Balmoral house was old and rundown. So, the owners – a young family – demolished the original house and built a new architect-designed home to suit their growing needs.
The replacement home is architect-designed and includes a glass lift, a pool with an aquarium window and a new kitchen by Dan Kitchens.
Dan Kitchens were approached early in their home building process – not long after DA approval – to design a kitchen suitable for a young family, as well as reflecting the qualities of the home itself.
Working from the architectural plans, Dan Kitchens was able to provide a photo-realistic image of the kitchen within the environment of the unbuilt home. This image allowed the clients to see precisely what Dan Kitchens was proposing and for them to also experience the inside of their home for the first time.
The owners requested a modern aesthetic using durable materials, generous storage, a straightforward layout and premium appliances.
A 3.6-metre island with bar seating anchors the new kitchen design, providing large drawers and extensive preparation space. A Calacatta-look Silestone surface forms the benchtop, while a timber-look finish matching the flooring wraps the island bar back.
The client selected a colour scheme that was then carried through the wider home. In the kitchen, dark navy polyurethane, warm oak timbers and light stonework define the palette. The project forms part of Dan Kitchens’ kitchen renovations on Sydney’s North Shore.
The open plan kitchen is well lit and is afforded good position in the home, surrounded by an outdoor entertaining area, scullery and dining.

An integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator helps the kitchen’s minimal aesthetic.
Durable Quartz-based stone with a soft calacatta-like marbling was specified for the island and splashback.
At one end of the kitchen is the scullery (by others), hidden discreetly by a tall sliding door.

The completed kitchen provides a durable and highly functional centre to the new family home while maintaining a strong relationship with the surrounding views and architecture. A large island provides substantial preparation, storage and seating space, while navy cabinetry, warm oak and pale stone establish a palette that carries naturally into the broader interior.
