From blenders and coffee makers to toasters and microwaves, power outlets are the often-overlooked champions that keep our kitchens humming with activity. So, let’s delve into the world of kitchen electrifying possibilities and explore some innovative power outlet ideas to make your kitchen not only functional but also a hub of convenience.
Why do we need power outlets in the kitchen?
In today’s fast-paced world, the kitchen is more than just a place to prepare meals; it’s the heart of the home, a hub of activity where we gather, cook, and connect. But have you ever stopped to think about the unsung heroes that keep your kitchen running smoothly?
Power outlets might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your dream kitchen, but they are the backbone of functionality. These unassuming fixtures provide the lifeblood of your culinary endeavours, ensuring you have the power needed to run your appliances and devices.

Benchtop appliances are the workhorses of the kitchen, and they rely on these power outlets to function. Think about your trusty toaster, coffee maker, or food processor. They depend on these electrical connections to serve you that perfect cup of coffee or that crispy morning toast.
But it’s not just the smaller gadgets; large appliances like refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers are essential elements in a modern kitchen. These energy-hungry appliances require dedicated power outlets to operate efficiently, ensuring your food stays fresh, your meals are cooked to perfection, and your dishes are sparkling clean.
In today’s digital age, we can’t escape our trusty mobile devices. Phones, tablets, and laptops have become indispensable, even in the kitchen. Whether you’re following a recipe online, streaming a cooking show, or video-calling a friend for culinary advice, these devices need their juice, and power outlets are their lifelines.
Double Power Points
In a modern kitchen, convenience is key, and the workhorse of the kitchen is the humble double power point outlet. Double power points, just to be clear, are outlets that offer not just one, but two sockets for your electrical needs. They’re incredibly practical and versatile.
However, it’s not just about functionality. Double power points come in various styles and colours, ensuring they seamlessly blend with your kitchen’s aesthetics. Plus, some models offer added benefits like lighting control, USB ports, USB-C ports, and even ethernet ports for all your smart kitchen needs.
Location Ideas for Power Outlets
Now, where should you install them in kitchens? Ignoring outlet positions for fixed appliances like refrigerators, microwaves and ovens, you have many locations around the kitchen. Let’s explore some ideas.
On Splashbacks
The most popular position for double power points is on a splashback (or wall) above the kitchen benchtop. It goes without saying you should place them in areas you plan to work with electrical appliances, but with consideration of electrical standards (e.g. away from water and heat sources). We tend to install them 120mm from the benchtop surface.
The more appliances you intend to keep on the benchtop the more outlets you’ll need.
You can mount power points on most splashback materials, with some mirrored splashback types showing some distortion in the mirror after the powerpoint hole has been cut.
In Appliance Niches / Cabinets
The back of appliance niches are ideal. Generally need at least 2 double power points to power the small benchtop appliances inside. A centre switch for a cabinet internal light is also recommended.
> To the sides of panels
If you’re not wanting to put a power point on your splashback, interrupting the look of your stone, an alternative is to put them onto the side panels.
On the ends of islands and peninsulas
Where there is no wall to install a powerpoint onto, we tend to put them onto the end panels of islands and peninsulas. During a kitchen renovation, it can take a bit of planning to get it there, including an extra thick or mitred end panel to house the internals of the powerpoint.
> At Bar Seating
Hide the power point at the bar area to the inside of a drop end.
> Inside a broom cabinet
Some larger kitchens include a broom/cleaning cabinet. Most homes have a stick vacuum so a power point placed inside for the charger is ideal.
> To Custom Panels
This power point has been installed onto a CNC-cut panel, located on the rear side of a kitchen island.
Other Power Point Types
Beyond the humble double power point, there are other more unique solutions to providing power to devices and appliances.
> In Drawer Power Points
Discover the convenience and safety of in-drawer power points for your kitchen. These hidden gems offer a range of benefits that will transform your cooking space into a more organised and secure environment. One of the key advantages of in-drawer power points is their ability to enhance kitchen organisation. Say goodbye to messy benchtops cluttered with charging cables and devices. With in-drawer power points, you can neatly store away your gadgets, ensuring a tidy and efficient workspace. Note that you need a specifically certified power point for use in drawers.
> Zetr
Zetr powerpoints are flush, trimless outlets that sit perfectly in line with the wall surface, delivering a clean, minimalist look that designers and architects value. Their recessed set-out system ensures precise alignment across plasterboard, timber, or stone, so banks of outlets read as one continuous plane rather than a series of protrusions.
The metal faceplates feel solid and refined, and the modular format means you can pair matching power, switching, and data in the same profile for a consistent visual language throughout a project. Because the covers are replaceable, finishes can be refreshed or changed without disturbing the rough-in—useful for long-term maintenance or future updates. The result is a durable, premium finish that reduces visual clutter and elevates the overall detailing of a space. Note: you’ll get the best outcome with early coordination and precise installation.
> Induction Charging Pads
In modern kitchens, functionality and convenience go hand in hand. That’s where induction charging pads come into play, revolutionising the way we power up our devices.
The benefits of induction charging pads are clear. They’re perfect for charging your phones and tablets effortlessly, making sure your devices are always ready to assist you in the kitchen. No more searching for charging cables or worrying about outlets – it’s all right under your fingertips.
One of the best things about these pads is how discreetly they’re mounted under the benchtop. You won’t even notice them until you need them. It’s sleek, efficient, and keeps your kitchen looking clean and uncluttered.
But, there’s a small trade-off for this cord-free convenience. Induction charging pads may not be as lightning-fast as some traditional chargers. You’ve also got to create a recess in the underside of the benchtop to get the charging pad to work, which is not practical if you have an existing stone benchtop.
Incorporating induction charging pads into your kitchen is a smart move, ensuring your devices stay charged without sacrificing style and space.
> Pop up power points
One innovative solution to the problem of visible power points is the pop-up power point. These nifty additions to your kitchen not only bring convenience to your countertop but also offer a sleek and unobtrusive design. So, how do these pop-up power points work? Well, they are cleverly concealed within your countertop, sitting discreetly until needed. When it’s time to power up your gadgets or appliances, a simple push or twist activates their pop-up mechanism. Voilà! What was once hidden now rises gracefully from the countertop, revealing a tower of multiple outlets.
This design is a technical user’s dream. They cater to the needs of those who are always in search of that extra plug for their gadgets and appliances. Whether you’re an avid home chef with a dozen kitchen gadgets or a tech enthusiast charging multiple devices, these outlets have got you covered. However, it’s worth noting that this convenience comes at a cost: the space it occupies within the cabinet below. So, while pop-up power points are a brilliant addition to any modern kitchen, they do require some thoughtful planning to make the most of your cabinet space.
> Key takeaways
Power outlets shape how a kitchen works day-to-day. The smart approach is pairing the familiar—well-placed double power points—with discreet, task-based solutions: splashbacks where practical (noting mirrored glass can distort after cut-outs), appliance niches with at least two doubles and a centre switch for internal lighting, and islands using concealed plates on drop ends or custom flush panels. Where you want an even cleaner read, pop-up units and trimless formats like Zetr minimise visual clutter; for clutter-free charging, in-drawer outlets and under-bench induction charging pads keep benches clear. And because many models add USB/USB-C, you can support devices without extra bricks. Plan locations early and coordinate depths, clearances and cut-outs with your cabinetmaker—done well, the power disappears into the detailing, and the kitchen simply works.
